Stock Measurement

In order to close a financial year, it is important for companies to know exactly what stock they own. As an inspection company, Peterson Control Union is recognised by independent accountants for providing exceptionally reliable stock inventories. Where possible, we work with conventional weight determination methods and in situations where this is not possible, we have a number of indirect methods of inventory measurement at our disposal.

Total Station

For stockpile inventories, stock is measured with geometrical “total station” equipment. By measuring distances and angles, the 3D volume of the stockpile can be calculated to great precision. This, in combination with the measured bulk density of the goods, yields a weight figure for the stockpile.

Vertical Silos

With vertical silo storage, the degree of filling is determined by measuring the fill level against the total height of the silo. By multiplying the fill percentage and the total silo capacity, the volume is calculated. A measured or reference value for the bulk density is used to calculate the mass of the material.

In many cases, volumetric measurement in combination with density calculations is the only available method.
